전후 SAC의 상황, LeMay가 넘겨받기 전후를 중심으로

Noel Parrish 장군: Kenny는 공군 총참모장 자리를 넘보고 있는데(MacArther의 부관이었음) 맥아더가 대통령 되면 나는 공군총참! 이런 기대 중이었다. Kenny는 SAC 운영에 관심이 없었고 McMullen이 그걸 운용하도록 했고 Kenny의 소홀함은 McMullen이 부관으로 오면서 더 심해졌다.

- 이때 economy moods란 절약정신을 발휘하려는 상태. (예산 삭감 기조로 움직이는 것)

 

 

As more B-29s came out of overhaul or mothballs, it was impossible to get personnel assigned to the new groups I was activating, so we robbed all USAF headquarters, including our own, to get bodies to maintain and fly the aircraft.

-mothball / come out of mothballs: 본래 mothballs이란 방충제인데 군사/항공에서 ‘장기간 저장해둔 장비를 다시 꺼내 운용 상태로 되돌리는 것’을 의미한다.

- 그러므로 come out of overhaul or mothball이란, 정비 끝내고 나오거나 오랫동안 저장되어 있던 B-29를 운용 상태로 복귀했다는 것.

당시엔 막사에서 버팔로 사냥은 금지되어 있는데 인디언을 향한 사격은 금지 규정 없었다는 것

 

Camp Crook was established during the Indian campaigns of the West. The original Cavalry parade grounds were still there in 1948. So were the original officers’ houses and three barracks built during World War II but subsequently abandoned.

- Camp Crook 설립 (서부 인디언 캠페인 도중에.) 여기서 ‘인디언 캠페인’이란 Indian Campaigns of the West = American Indian Wars (특히 1860s–1890s 서부 전쟁들) 시기이다. 미국 정부와 군대가 아메리카 원주민을 상대로 벌인 일련의 군사 작전 시기. 여러 토벌전(campaigns)을 총칭함.

- original Cavalry parade grounds: 미 육군 기병대(US Cavalry)가 행진(parade)/점검(review) 받던 중앙 훈련장이나 광장을 의미하며 19세기 미군 기지를 상징한다. 기병대 중심 군사력을 보여주었다.

- 1948년에 아직도 그 “원래의(19세기) 기병대 퍼레이드 광장”이 남아있었다 = 이 기지는 19세기 인디언 전쟁 시절 모습 그대로였다.

When LeMay put out the call for him, Power was about to leave for London as the air attache in the American embassy there. “He had already bought all of his stiff shirts demanded by protocol. I got him snaked out of that.”

- 이건 LeMay가 Power를 SAC 임무 위해 차출했을 때 의미하는 것 같은데 맞는지. 그는 이미 셔츠 빳빳하게 다려놓고 다 비행기 탈 준비 했는데 그에게 나오라고 했던 것.
