Once a man sold his well to a farmer. When the farmer went to draw water from that well the next day, the man did not allow him to draw water from it. He said, “I sold you the well, not the water, so you cannot draw water from it.”

The farmer became very angry and went to see the wise emperor, Akbar. He described everything to Akbar and asked for help.

The emperor called Birbal and handed over this case to him. Birbal called the man who sold the well to the farmer.

Birbal asked the man, “Why didn’t you let him draw water from the well? You have sold the well to the farmer, haven’t you?”

The man replied, “Birbal, I have sold the well to the farmer, but not the water. He has no right to draw water from the well.”

Then Birbal smiled and said to him, “You say that you have sold the well to the farmer, but the water from it is yours. Then, you have no right to keep your water in the farmer’s well. Either you pay rent to the farmer to keep your water in the well, or you take it out of his well right away.”

The man understood then that he had no choice but to let the farmer draw water from the well.
