커티스 르메이와 마오쩌둥

당시 날씨 예보 때문에 걱정이었으나 중국 국민당의 정부 쪽 정보가 믿을만하지 못해, 르메이는 마오의 공산당 측에게 도움을 청함.

 

Chiang’s corruption, Mao’s Communism, and Japan’s militarism made it a war that one could only wish all three sides would lose. (124)

- 장제스 측의 부패, 마오의 공산주의, 일본의 군국주의는 셋 모두가 패배하기를 바랄 수밖에 없는 전쟁으로 만들었음. à 차라리 셋 다 망했으면 하는 전쟁이 되었다.

 

르메이는 마오에게 자신의 B-29 승무원들을 인계해 달라고 하고 물품을 제공해줌. 이후 일기예보도 부탁하게 됨. (당시 마오 부대가 스스로 조달 가능한 의료 물품은 splints와 bandages뿐 ㅠ)

 

They[Mao’s people] had very little access to anything more sophisticated. They were so short of medicines their doctors cried with happiness when they unloaded the airplane. They had never even seen such new “wonder drugs” as sulfa. (125-26)

- sulfa: 1930-40년대 초반에 개발된 최초의 효과적인 향균제로, 페니실린이 본격적으로 사용되기 전, 2차 세계대전의 군에서 상처 감염, 폐렴, 성병 등 감염병 치료에 쓰인 ‘기적의 신약’으로 불렸다.

 

But there was nothing unselfish in LeMay’s generosity to the Communists. “I wanted to be damn sure that there were medical supplies in those areas when my own people came in, busted up or wounded. . . . Nor did I leave out of the picture the fact it would be bound to react favorably on our people when Mao Tse Tung found himself possessed of those supplies. He knew who’d given them to him.” (126)

 

Shortly after receiving the medical supplies, Mao sent LeMay a gift—a captured Japanese Samurai sword. And in return, LeMay sent him a pair of binoculars. Shortly after that, LeMay was able to set up his own private radio station in Yenan, with a small contingent of men stationed there to send him weather reports as well as any news there might be about fallen B-29s and their crews.

의료 지원 받고 마오가 일본군의 사무라이 검을 주고, 보답으로 다시 르메이는 쌍안경 보내고, 그래서 결국 Yenan에 날씨 정보 알려주고 B-29 승무원 정보 알려주는 Radio station을 직통 연결하게 됨!

 

Aerial photos taken November 17 illustrated why LeMay was so worried about the weather. These were photos of the aircraft factory at Omura, and they proved that the November 11 raid against it had been a dismal flop.
