중국에서의 르메이

LeMay’s B-29s은 12월 18일, incendiaries를 Hankow에 폭격하는데, 이는 다가올 일의 조짐(harbinger)가 되었다. 이때 르메이의 폭격은 주요 기지로서 Hankow를 파괴한 수준에 달했다. (Hankow는 오늘날의 Wuhan)

 

 

While LeMay had disagreed with Wedemeyer on the Hankow mission, the two men were in basic accord on an even more important issue—the question of whether the Twentieth B.C. should be moved out of China.

- Wedemeyer와 LeMay가 뜻을 함께한 부분: 20폭격기부대를 중국에서 빼내야 한다.

 

“it was always a battle over gasoline,” LeMay agreed. “We hauled gas and we chisled gas [[from the Air Transport Command]]. And Chennault was always trying to get us to help him out. . . . I had been recommending not to send any more B-29s because of logistics. I didn’t say, ‘Move them out,’ [I said] ‘Don’t sent anymore.’” (128)

- haul gas: 기름을 끌고 나르다, 운반하다. 트럭이나 탱크, 항공편 따위로 연료 수송을 힘들게 했다는 뉘앙스를 준다.

- chisel은 직역하면 ‘조각내다’인데, 여기서는 ‘어떻게든 빼내다,’ ‘슬쩍 떼어내다’에 가깝다. Air Transport Command에서 연료를 얻어내다, 뜯어내다 의미.

- Chennault는 맨날 우리한테 도와달라고 해!!!!! (르메이는 싫어함)

- logstics: 연료 및 물류 문제

- 르메이는 중국에서 B-29를 빼내자가 아니라, 더 보내지 말자고 함 (연료 문제 등이 있고 누구는 도와달라 하고 등등.)

 

 

Wedemeyer, however, said to move them out. And LeMay did not disagree.

*그동안 르메이가 수행한 임무: Mukden (21 Dec) Bangkok (3 Jan), Omura (6 Jan)… etc.

And on January 15, with Arnold’s concurrence, the Joint Chiefs granted Wedemeyer’s request. The Twentieth Bomber Command stepped up preparations for its move out of China. But Curt LeMay would not be there to see it. (128)
