McKelway, who attended a farewell ceremony for Hansell, his departing boss, spent much of his time in bemused observation of LeMay, his new boss. “It was now known whether LeMay would be there in time for the ceremony, but he was. I wanted a photograph of LeMay shaking hands with Hansell and I so informed LeMay. [[He]] seemed surprised that anybody would want such a thing. He had kept in the background at the ceremony, smoking a pipe and hiding it in his pants pocket when the band played ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and the troops of the Twenty-first Bomber Command passed in review.”
- [[He]] seemed surprised that anybody would want such a thing 여기서 말하는 such a thing은 누가 그런 걸 사진 찍고 싶어하나(한셀과의 사진찍기) 하는 것.
After the parade, when the time came for picture taking, LeMay stepped uncomfortably in front of the camera with the pipe in hand. He tried to get it back into his pants pocket where, it seemed to McKelway, he must have some hidden apparatus to prevent it from burning his pants and his legs.
“General, please let me hold your pipe,” McKelway suggested. He handed McKelway the pipe with what seemed like a look of “abject misery,” said in a barely audible voice, “Where do you want me to stand?”
- apparatus: 장치
If this incident makes LeMay appear awkwardly self-effacing and even timid […]
Awkward he could be, and reticent sometimes to the point of seeming rude and making people around him uneasy. (135)
- reticent: 과묵한
But there is little evidence that he was ever timid. Within a few days after his permanent arrival on Guam he was in contention with the Navy, an “enemy” he sometimes seemed to fight almost as fiercely as he fought the Germans and Japanese, though less effectively.
LeMay was duly impressed by the spacious, comfortable house the admiral had arranged for his Seabee construction corps to build for him, the staff of Filipino mess boys, the immaculate uniforms of the naval officers and the mess boys (in contrast to his own winkled Air Force tans) … (136)
- Seabee construction corps
After making some discreet inquiries among the construction workers, LeMay managed to come up with a bootleg copy of the Navy’s Construction Priority List for Guam.
Though Nimitz was the theater commander, LeMay realized, he “had to give us his life’s blood in logistics, in supply and support and so on.” But at the same time he “had no operational control over the B-29s. Thus he was awarded no credit for anything they accomplished.” (137)
When he took such considerations into account, LeMay was inclined to adopt a more tolerant attitude toward the Navy. For a while, at least. (137)
An indication of what Arnold expected from him[LeMay] can be found in a memorandum, Arnold to Norstad, dated January 14, 1945, just a few days before the Air Force chief’s fourth heart attack:
[…] . . . Unless something drastic is done to change this condition soon, it will not be long before the B-29 is just another tactical airplane. . . .
- just another tactical airplane
With very little weather information coming out of northern and central Asia, there was no way to predict the weather over Japan. And it would have provided scant comfort if he had been able to do so because Japan was one big cloud factory.
“You could go on forever,” LeMay discovered, “trying to get up to a target in such a wind. And if you went cross-wind, your bombsight wouldn’t take care of the drift you had. If you came in downwind, you didn’t have time to get a proper run on the target. This was really a tough proposition to lick.” (138)
- get up to a target에서 ‘get up to’는 (비행기가) 목표 지점까지 올라가다 / 도달하다
- drift you had: drift는 항공에서 ‘~풍’을 의미.
He took a hard look at that thirty-five-thousand-foot operating altitude and decided the jet stream wasn’t the only disadvantage it offered.
[On the January 23 Nagoya mission]
[…] the Japanese had deployed every available pursuit plane, and while they were not individually as formidable as the German fighters, their numbers created a hazard that couldn’t be overlooked, especially since Japanese pilots didn’t hesitate to ram their planes into the big invading bombers. (138)
