From Curtis LeMay Biography

 

Soon after Pearl Harbor was bombed, Japanese Americans in California were sent to concentration camps(not in a nazi sense, they're closer to internment camps).

 

At Wright Field a few days later they were introduced to the first B-24 out of the factory. A check pilot ushered them aboard with two other Air Corps pilots--J. B. Montgomery and C. J. Cochrane--and after a few words of instruction, invited Colonel Haynes to take the pilot's seat.
With a little more instruction, Haynes managed to start the plane, take it off the ground, fly it around the field, and land it. One more thime he took it off and landed it. Then he said, "Okay, LeMay, get in here."
Lemay made one takeoff and landing, Montgomery made one and Cochrane made one, whereupon the check pilot certified all four as qualified B-24 pilots, which meant that LeMay had to his credit fifteen minutes of flying time in a B-24 before he few on across the Atlantic Ocean to England.
