By mid-October, thirty of their thirty-five had been delivered. Besides being huge by the standards of its day—seventy-four feet long, one-hundred-four-foot wingspan, twenty-four tons fully loaded, forth-eight-hundred horsepower in its four engines—the B-17 was a beautiful machine, with its long, graceful lines and high, distinctive tail.

But LeMay didn’t give his boys much time to beam over it.

They practiced a few high-altitude flights and one day they flew out of Syracuse on a twelve-hour “navigational” flight to Florida, which was no more than an orientation flight for the navigators. They hadn’t even joined the group until two weeks before its arrival in Syracuse. None of them had ever navigated a B-17 on a flight of any length, just as none of the bombardiers had ever dropped a real bomb.

1. 몇 번의 고고도 비행을 하고, 12시간의 navigational 비행을 시라쿠스에서 플로리다까지 했고, 이게 그 항법사들에게는 본격적인 훈련이라기보다는 오리엔테이션 비행에 불과했다(no more than). (그들은 실전 감각이 부족한 상태이다.)

The pilots had logged an average of only about one hundred hours in B-17s. The navigators had experienced only the one long flight, the easy cruise down the Atlantic coast to Florida and back. The gunners had fired only a few rounds of ammunition in air-to-air practice. And the bombardiers had never dropped anything but stove-pipe mock bombs, in bright sunshine over the Mojave Desert.

“I know it doesn’t make sense,” Anderson admitted, “but they’re yelling their heads off for a heavy bomb group out there. At the moment, you’re more ready to go than anyone else.”

About two minutes after ushering Anderson out of his office, LeMay ushered in his closest aides de Russy, Preston, Fulkrod, Cohen, and several others.

“Our original orders,” LeMay said, “are to proceed to Prestwick, Scotland, the moment we’re ready to go. And we’ll find ourselves grinding away toward the Pacific without any ground crews, without any equipment, even without a lot of our personal belongings.”
He looked around to find a roomful of bewildered faces gaping at him. “We’ve now got how many of our planes?” he asked. “What’s the latest count?”
Someone said, “Thirty-three. Two to go.”
“And when do we get those two?”
“Tomorrow morning, they say.”
“Okay, there’s only one thing we can do,” LeMay said. “Button up and button up fast. Get to work on those airplanes. We’ve got to shake off the flu germs of Syracuse before they change those orders.”

Three days later, the group was as ready to go as anyone could expect it to be. The pilots had never seen the north Atlantic, of course; they knew nothing about ocean flying and very little about the dangers of icing on their wings.
- as anyone could expect it to be: ‘누구라도 기대할 수 있는 만큼 …한’ 이라는 의미로, 누구라도 기대할 수 있을 만큼은 (ready to go 갈 준비 되어 있었다)
