LeMay Biography Reading 4

LeMay, impatient as usual, sent his crews into the factory to help work on the modifications while he, reminded by a sudden October cold spell that he was no longer in the hot California desert, and that his group would soon be flying into a cold, damp English winter, drove a truck out to a quartermaster depot near Syracuse and scrounged all the winter clothing they were willing to give him.

- quartermaster: 병참 부대 내지는 부서. 병참 장교를 뜻하기도 한다.

- depot: 창고, 보급소

- scrounge: 어렵게 구하다, 빌리다, 얻어내다는 뉘앙스로 간청하거나 요령껏 공짜로 얻는 뉘앙스가 있다.

 

당장 추운 영국으로 날아가야 한다는 걸 깨달은 르메이는 병참 부대로 가서 다짜고짜 얻어올 수 있는 모든 겨울 물품을 얻어온다. 물론 그에게는 허가 서류도 없었고 그런 장비 요청할 권한 같은 것도 없었지만 그냥 일단 보급소로 가서 “By God, we’re going overseas!,” “We need underwear. Anything you’ve got. Let me have it. Overshoes…” 해서 얻어냈다. 얼마나? 트럭 두 대 분량이나.

 

TS: Before he was through, he drove away with two truckloads of heavy underwear, boots, galoshes, overcoats, blankets, and sweaters.

- he was through: 그가 일을 마치다. (여기서는 ‘그가 일을 끝내기 전에,’ ‘그가 다 끝나기 전까지는’ 즉 ‘군수품 창고에서 물품 구하는 일을 다 마치기 전에 결국 ~했다’는 뉘앙스로 읽는다. 여기서는 문자 그대로 ‘끝내다’보다는 그가 그 일(겨울 용품 얻어오는 일)을 다 마칠 즈음에, 내지는 ‘결국에는’ 정도이다. Before ~ was through는 관용적으로 “어느새 일을 마칠 때 즈음엔 그새 ~한 상태가 되어 있었다”는 뉘앙스를 준다.)

As the cold spell in Syracuse continued, LeMay noticed for the first time a personal problem that frightened him enough to send him scurrying to the base hospital.

By the following morning, the pain, as if to avoid the heat, had raised itself to the back of his neck and seemed to be firmly, rigidly ensconced there.

- as if to avoid the heat: (그 고통이 스스로 어제 치료받은 방식의) 열기를 피하려는 것처럼

- ensconce: 고통이 목 뒤에 단단히 자리잡고 움직이지 않는 상태를 표현하는 동사. ‘편안하고 안전하게 자리를 잡다, 몸을 숨기다’

 

Doing his best to preserve his dignity in the crowded dining room, he stood up and hurried to the latrine to wipe off his shirt, but by the time he got there he was no longer thinking about his shirt.

- latrine: 군대용 야전 화장실, 공용 화장실을 의미한다.

- 화장실에 셔츠에 묻은 얼룩을 닦으러(wipe off) 갔다.

 

“You’ve got Bell’s palsy,” Walsh said to the worried colonel.

It was not an assuring thing to say to an aircraft pilot. When one thinks of palsy, one envisages shaky hands, hardly conducive to smooth flying.

- palsy: 마비, 떨림

- Bell’s palsy: 안면 신경마비

The nerves freeze, then become swollen, cutting off the blood supply. Finally they degenerate, disconnecting some of the facial muscles from the central nervous system.

Only the nerves on the right side of LeMay’s face were affected, but that was enough to make one eyelid droop and his mouth sag noticeably to one side, stamping what looked like a perpetual sneer on his face. It made him appear even tougher, more hard-nosed than ever, a circumstance that might make his men fear him more than ever, but wasn’t likely to increase either his popularity or his comfort.

- one eyelid droop: 눈꺼풀은 아래로 늘어짐(축 쳐짐, droop)

- his mouth sag to one side: 입은 한쪽으로 쏠린 상태임. (sag: 축 늘어지다, 아래로 쏠리다)

- stamping what looked like a perpetual sneer on his face: 도장 찍듯이 새기다, 각인하다(stamp)라는 동사를 써서 얼굴에 ‘영원한 비웃음’같아 보이는 표정을 새겨둠.

- hard-nosed: 냉철한, 감정에 휘둘리지 않는, 현실적인

“Give me the ungarbled word,” LeMay demanded. “Are you giving to do anything about it? […]”

There were a lot of treatments—heat, electric shock, massage, various kinds of physical therapy. But, Dr. Walsh said, “as nearly as we could discern, the cases we didn’t treat at all came through just as well as those we treated.”

- ungarbled: ‘garble’은 (정보, 말, 신호 등을) 왜곡하다, 뒤섞어서 알아듣기 어렵게 하다는 뜻으로 여기서 ‘ungarbled word’는 ‘왜곡되지 않은 말, 명확한 말, 똑바로 된 말’을 의미한다. 르메이는 정확하게 말하라고 요구한 것이다.

- as nearly as we could discern: 우리가 파악할 수 있기로는, 우리가 아는 한, 우리가 관찰한 바로는. ‘nearly’는 ‘거의’라는 뜻이므로 확신이 조금 부족한 뉘앙스를 전달한다.

- come through: (어려운 상황을) 잘 넘기다, 회복하다, 헤쳐 나가다

- 뭔가 해보라 혹은 무엇을 할거냐는 르메이의 질문에 의사는 “우리가 전혀 치료하지 않았던 경우들이 우리가 치료했던 경우들과 비등했다.”고 답했다. 치료해도 유의미한 차이는 없고 꼭 뭔가 할 필요가 없다는 뉘앙스이다.

 

“You’ve named my treatment,” LeMay said. “Good-bye.”

- “You’ve named my treatment”: 당신이 내 치료법을 정했다 (말했다, 명명했다) = 아무것도 안하기로 한 르메이.

 

“Keep the right side of your face warm. Stay out of drafts. And stand in front of a mirror every day for at least an hour, trying to move your facial muscles.”

- drafts: 외풍, 틈새바람, 찬 바람이 스며드는 것.

As the ball turret modifications were completed, the 305th finally began receiving its new B-17s, bright, shiny, and redolent of that combination—metal, leather, and oil—which creates the distinctive aroma of new airplanes.
